House of Hungarian Music

The future House of Hungarian Music will become a “heart” of the park, based on the crossroads of main movement directions and in a ring of four new museum buildings. We propose the idea of the building as architectural incarnation of synthesis of vision and hearing, metaphor of music as a complicated system of simple primitives, as a shell for sound experiments, multifunctional stage for learning Hungary Music in all it’s manifestations.

“See deeply enough, and you see musically”

Thomas Carlyle

The HOHM building is going to be situated in the inner part of the Budapest City Park, surrounded of hundred years old trees and with picturesque view on the Vajdahunyad Castle and the City Park Lake. Building’s site is also opened to the main historical axis, which is connecting the Memorial of 1956 with the building of the New National Gallery.
It will become a “heart” of the park, based on the crossroads of main movement directions and in a ring of four new museum buildings, and is going to be attractive cultural and tourist centre with unique symbolic sense of what music is. Building should combine strong functionality characteristics and provide strong idea of inner and outer spaces forming.

Master plan and public space

The House of Hungarian Music will be implemented in the heart of the Budapest City Park, as the one of five new museums within the framework of the Liget Budapest Project. Planning of the building site was done considering the distribution of main park’s pedestrian movement streams. It is assumed that cite will provide diversity public space, which connects main pedestrian directions and makes incoming entrance area of building. The remaining space around the HHM is interpreted as an open air, free space accessible to everybody.
In cause of HHM’s location in the inner part of park, museum building will be connected with traffic circulation by underground tunnel, which is connecting underground parking of Ötvenhatosok Square and underground level of the building on the level -3.600 m.

Main pedestrian way of the side connects the Park lake and the new Park’s General axis and at the same time ropes people into the building’s inner yard. Plan configuration of the plot represents itself as a continuation of the City Park, in the same way, the building’s inner yard as a continuation of the outside let visitors get into Museum from the inside of building.
On the ground floor HHM’s event hall could be opened to outside and provide summer stage, which is oriented to the Park lake. Besides main axises and the buildings’s body, the Museum’s body has ring-patterned footpath, which is designed to avoid the trees felling and to provide pedestrian circulation on site. Footpath also creates four public zones with necessary landscape and design elements and saved trees included into paved sites. The landscape around the House of Music is going to be natural, not overloaded of special designed elements: only footpath system and old park’s foliage.

Sound as a three-dimensional painting

Sound turned to a building – this is the main idea of HOHM. But how could we reach that in metaphorically architectural way? Scenario of the projecting building will help us to make it clear. Main optional characteristic of what exactly will happen in the exhibition of the House of Music is interactive educational function of it. It means that the main purpose of this institution is an all-around experience possibility in such part of arts as music. Consequently, main building's function is going to work with two humans senses: hearing and vision.
Widely known neurological phenomenon “synaesthesia” (or "union of the senses") in which stimulation of one sensory or cognitive pathway leads to automatic, involuntary experiences in a second sensory or cognitive pathway, has one of its forms-chromesthesia, which means connection of vision and hearing senses. According to Anthony Braxton’s “Composition Notes”, some of synaesthets also resemble irregular three-dimensional geometric forms and shapes. On embryological hypothesis it might be due to incomplete differentiation between the senses of sight and hearing and the fact accidental revival of such features, which in some distant age may be the general rule in humanity. Concept of symbolic meaning of the building’s structure is based on that amazing ancient humans feature which came down to nowadays throw exceptional cases of synaesthesia.

Furthermore, what is music if not a complicated combination of simple elements? The combining of meter, tempo, rhythm, melody, harmony, dynamics, timbre, and musical instruments creates a sense that music is "organized". The combination of any or all of these elements to form "music" provides for the notion of musical unity. When two tones are played simultaneously, a listener can sometimes perceive an additional tone whose frequency is a sum or difference of the two frequencies. In the same way, HHM’s building appears as a combination of well-organized tree-dimensional primitives, which create some new spaces by intersecting each other. In twenty first century music is searching new forms and combinations as well as new spaces for sound and this way of building’s designing corresponds to this modern request. Moreover, we should perceive such conceptual method rather as process than as a result.

Shell for sound

Sound fills up any space. In House of the Hungarian Music one of the tasks is to create some kind of shell for sound. Different room shapes can provide different acoustic characteristics and place various scenarios. So, using diverse configurations in the inner space we ensure huge amount of possible ways of exploitation exhibition’s area. New spaces and stages are springing for expression the nature of sound as well as historical development of Hungarian music.

HOHM consist of set of simple geometric figures, which were put together on a circle axis and provide open air inner yard. Set of figures is cutout from outside by cylinder. In this way, building’s structure is solid from outside and composite from inside.
The zoning of the plot oriented to the main movement directions and the most important park objects. Main avenues extending from the inner yard and provide main pedestrian directions on site. Composed configuration of building creates unique inner spaces.
Set of figures is cutout from outside by cylinder. In this way, building’s structure is solid from outside and composite from inside.Main entrance is organized from the inner yard in cone’s basement on the mark 0.000. Entrance hall has two levels and continues on the mark -3.600m. Radial staircase from ground to underground floor creates amphitheater with atrium, which makes flexible public space. Hall – is a cultural nucleus, which is going to be intensive-used public zone as a part of exhibition as well as an independent space with it’s own infrastructure. On the underground level on the mark -3.600 HHM’s building connects with underground parking of Ötvenhatosok Square via underground corridor.
Located on the North-Eastern part of building rectangular box hide event hall for 430 spectators. The 8.7 meters height event hall has entrances on two levels: from the entrance hall on mark -3.600 and from the entrance hall on mark 0.000. The hall differs with extreme flexibility and can be easily adjusted for performances, symphonic concerts, contemporary dance and defile. There is a possibility to make an amphitheater or a flat floor hall. Furthermore, the distinctive feature of the layout is absence of the back wall of the building: if necessary this barrier can be “taken away” which will significantly wider performance and show possibilities by providing possibility to continue their actions behind the limits of the building.
Apart from central hall the building also includes two entrance groups, opened to the inner yard: service entrance and studying centre.
Exposition areas of the House of Hungarian Music is solver in two levels: permanent is based on the lower lever on the mark +10.950 m and expositional spaces for temporary exhibitions are settled down on the highest building’s level on the mark +16 .950 m.
In case of estimated attendance and degree of accessibility, permanent exhibition areas arranged on the lower of two exposition levels.
Intersection of different volumetric geometric shapes generates extraordinary inner space, which consist of different-shaped halls placed one after another on a circle. Such an enfilade planning structure gives as an opportunity to organize round-shaped exposition way, providing chronological axis throw this visitor’s way, evident start and logical finish at almost same point.

Temporary exhibition is going to be placed on the highest level of the building. Our goal was to create not just single multifunctional transforming space but neither a combination of separate convenient spaces. Each of them can be used in it’s own way, according to special exposition task and provides certain visual spaces and acoustic qualities. Expositional room “hangar” provides large empty space that can be used for exhibitions that need large empty space; cylinder with special facing could be a place for acoustic experiments; vault room can be used as screening room- different spaces have unlimited amount of using variations. Some of exhibition spaces have rooflight, some rooms can be used separately.
HoHM, also provides an educational function. Learning centre has got separated entrance and it’s own infrastructure. Entrance hall organized from the inner yard and acts as a beginning of vertical communication which leads visitors to the second level on the mark 3.750 m. On the mark 5.400 m learning centre is connected with library and listening studio. Library is opened to it’s own lobby which is connecting with Sound Dome. Sound Dome is connected with main staircase lobby, in this way figures separated on first two two levels on the mark 5.400 become connected into circle-path space.
